Vin DeRosa: Life as a Singer-Songwriter

Over the last 15 years, I have been writing, recording, and performing original music and collaborating with many great musicians and artists along the way. It was in 2001 when I starting busking (“performing”) at the local Starbucks where I realized it was more lucrative and exciting to play music for people than it was to work the typical minimum-wage job available to teenagers like me. But my penchant for harnessing the “butterflies” that come with performing in public began in the early nineties when, with prodding from my mother, I became a regular performer in my Catholic grammar school’s annual talent show, inevitably falling in love with the roar of a crowd. Always in collaboration and competition with my four artistically-inclined brothers, I began to pour myself into songwriting and playing guitar and drums to accompany my singing.

Pursuing the outlets of high school vocal and jazz ensembles, as well as playing guitar and touring locally with a then-active ska band, I was again struck with the thrill of performing and being part of a music group. It was around that time when, as a young, romantic singer-songwriter, I started dating a schoolmate named Sarah who would later become my wife and the mother of my children.

My love of food and music, plus experience with service has kept me working steadily in the city that I love — Buffalo, NY. Branching out after my first official release in July 2015, I’ve continued writing, collaborating, and recording with an ever-expanding family of musicians who continue to bless me with the ability to give voice to my musical conceptions. This year, you will see the release of new music and the continuation of bringing live music to all corners of a growing community.

When all is said and done, I would like to be remembered as a person who lived a lifestyle that helped others. I get an overwhelming amount of satisfaction when I can see the results of my hard word work. The goal for me is the be able to unite and uplifts people’s hearts through my most blessed gift; the gift expressing my inner thoughts and soul through the music I set forth to all through which I have a pleasure to reach each time I play. Simultaneously, I strive to set an example for my son as a positive role mode, who’s purpose is to help enrich the lives of others. With the incredibly hectic pace of life in 2016 and beyond, the real healing and mind altering powers of music are becoming increasingly valuable in spite of a toppled music industry and massive internet access. “Where words fail, music speaks” and I am a grateful student of life as I see it through the lens of songs.
